Why fillings matter
A tooth filling replaces the part of a tooth damaged by decay, sealing it so bacteria can’t get back in. Caught early, decay is small and quick to treat. Left untreated, it can reach the nerve. At that point a deep filling may not be enough, and the tooth may need root canal treatment or an extraction.

White (composite) fillings
Composite fillings are made from a strong, tooth-coloured resin. We choose a shade to match your tooth, so the filling blends in and is hard to spot, even on teeth that show when you smile.
Because composite bonds directly to the tooth, we only need to remove the decayed part. More of your healthy tooth is kept, which helps it stay strong for longer. Composite can also be used to repair chips and small breaks, and to replace old silver fillings you’d rather not see.
Amalgam (silver) fillings
Amalgam is a hard-wearing metal filling that has been used for many years. It is still suitable in some situations, particularly on back teeth. However, it is silver in colour, it doesn’t bond to the tooth, and it usually means removing more healthy tooth to hold the filling in place. In line with UK regulations, amalgam is not used for children under 15, or for pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless strictly necessary. We’ll talk through the right material for each tooth with you.

What happens during a filling?
- Numbing the tooth. We use local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during treatment.
- Removing decay. We gently clean away the decayed part of the tooth.
- Placing the filling. White filling material is added in layers, with each layer set hard using a special light.
- Shaping and polishing. We shape the filling to fit your bite and polish it to a natural finish.
A filling usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on its size.

 You shouldn’t feel pain during the filling, as the tooth is numbed first. Most people say the injection is the only part they notice. Your lip and cheek may stay numb for a few hours afterwards.

Fillings can last many years with good care. How long yours lasts depends on its size, where it is in your mouth, your bite and how well you look after your teeth. Regular check-ups let us spot a worn filling before it causes problems.
Usually, yes. Because a Maryland bridge leaves the neighbouring teeth largely untouched, it can be removed if you decide on an implant in future.
Some sensitivity to hot, cold or biting is normal for a few days, sometimes up to a couple of weeks. If it gets worse, your bite feels high or you have significant pain, call us so we can check the filling.
 Call us as soon as you can. A temporary filling kit from a pharmacy can protect the tooth for a short time, but it is not a lasting repair. Existing patient emergency appointments start from £85, and new patient emergencies from £95.
