A permanent option to fill in a missing tooth
A bridge can be used if you have lost a tooth and need it replacing. It is a permanent, fixed option to fill in the missing tooth. There are two types of bridges:
- Maryland (resin bonded bridge)
- Conventional (fixed-fixed bridge)
A Maryland bridge is an artificial tooth, held on with 1 or 2 wings of metal or zirconia, onto the back of the adjacent teeth. The advantages of the Maryland bridges are they do not require drilling of healthy teeth, they are therefore reversible if you ever wanted to consider having an implant in the future. The disadvantage is that these bridges do tend to de-bond more easily than conventional bridges.
A conventional bridge is an artificial tooth attached to a crown which is placed on the adjacent tooth. These bridges are stronger and more stable than Maryland bridges, however we do have to prepare the tooth for a crown, which we wouldn’t recommend on a healthy tooth.
